Endodontic treatment of a tooth — most commonly known as root canal treatment — is a dental procedure used to treat infection or irreversible damage inside the tooth.
What is it:
Inside every tooth there is soft tissue called dental pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp becomes infected or inflamed (most often due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures), it can cause pain and may lead to an abscess.
Root canal treatment removes the diseased pulp, cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal, and seals it to prevent reinfection.
Steps of endodontic treatment:
- Diagnosis and X-rays — the dentist/endodontist confirms the presence of infected or inflamed pulp through examination and imaging.
- Local anesthesia — the tooth is completely numbed.
- Access opening — a small opening is made in the crown to access the pulp chamber.
